Guidelines to Writing a Resume

There is no universal resume format and there are plenty of different options for you to choose when composing your resume. However, there are some good guidelines you should follow. Your resume is often the first thing a potential employer sees. It should look professional and be easy to read.

  1. If you decide to include an Objective, make sure that is relates to the job you are applying for.
  2. The resume should be concise and factual. Always list your education, employment history and accomplishments.
  3. Make sure your history flows. Try not to leave gaps in time.
  4. Keep a separate list of references and have a copy ready if requested.
  5. Select strong action words, such as launch, instructed, revised, trained, utilized, and administered.
  6. Always send a cover letter with your resume. Try to address it to a specific person if possible.
  7. When you do have an interview, bring two or three extra resumes in case the prospective employer has misplaced the one you sent.

Remember: your resume is a door opener! Employers are looking at many different resumes. Work carefully to make sure your resume stands out from the rest.
